![]() ![]() The only thing that worries me is that the show isn’t EXCEEDINGLY popular like a lot of HBO Originals are. It wasn't until Mary tried to kill him and they had the talk about love that he actually grew as a character which is made very clear by him inviting Doug into their bed and having decided to more officially renounce his old life in a way that wasn't so "pathetic" and truly made him a rich boy no longer. However this initially scared him and on its own likely wouldn't have lead to real character growth. That he had new skills and new instincts that no lily livered rich boy could possess. In that moment and only partially because of the alcohol, all the fear and trauma and expectations faded into the background and he discovered that his experiences on the ship actually had affected him. He believes he is a pathetic lily livered rich boy who ran off to play pirate and who can only ruin peoples lives but is bound by noble expectations to return to his home. I think that before that moment he was still reckoning with his childhood trauma and the recent psychological damage he sustained at the hands of Chauncey. LUCIUS IS ALIVE I REFUSE TO BELIEVE OTHERWISE. I’m gonna continue spreading the word about it so we can at least get a season 2. This show means SO much to me as a queer nonbinary person, and I’m so thankful for David, Taika, and the rest of the cast and crew for giving us such a gem of a show. I binged all 8 eps last Friday and have spent the last 5 days constantly thinking about this show, anxiously waiting for the finale to the point where I was literally experiencing physical anxiety symptoms (which are finally thankfully gone). I haven’t been this invested in a show since wwdits last October and even then I wasn’t nearly as obsessed as I am with ofmd. That’s more than can be said for Nandermo at the end of the most recent season of wwdits lmao. Though I am very thankful that Ed and Stede were confirmed to be in love prior to the angst/separation/misunderstanding. Like if for some reason (god forbid) it’s not renewed for a second season, I would absolutely HATE for the show to end in such a sad way. I do think it was quite of a ballsy move to end the season like this. I just hope they don’t drag out the BlackBonnet angst for too long :( Which means that if there’s a season 2 (please dear GOD let there be a season 2) there will be a lot going on. It looks like they really wanted to set up the next season as a journey to get Ed and the Revenge back. But I really had hoped that Stede would make it back to Ed in time. Like the last ep felt so devoid of the usual humor the show has, though of course there was still some - and this is part of what makes this show so great honestly. I had a hunch when the confession/kiss scene happened (thank GOD we got confirmation that they’re in love) in ep9 instead of ep10 that we were probably headed for some angst, though I didn’t expect quite this much angst. I knew I wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep til I watched the eps lmao. Initially I was planning on waking up early this morning before work to watch the episodes, and I slept for 3ish hours until right before 2am (when the eps came out where I am) when I woke up. ![]() Of course Stede runs, he doesn't want to kill Blackbeard or damn him to a hateful life. All this, after condemning Ed to the king's service, a life of "domesticity folding socks and living under society's thumb" in exactly the same kind of life that Stede hated and wanted to escape all season. Then, just after Stede's been frog marched to what he assumes is his own death, and accepts that he ruins everything he touches, he sees another identical Badminton die.in exactly the same way as the first haunting death, but far more gruesome, right in front of him. Stede doesn't go looking because he's convinced he ruins everything, and he was literally haunted by the death of the first person he "killed", Badminton. Things work or they do not, there's no adjusting on the fly. A person like that, who never asks for help, who never has really received help, who thinks everything is all on him or it's fucked.that person doesn't go looking when things go wrong, he just walks away because he has no way to change it or fix anything. He doesn't ask for help, ever isn't really offered help by his people, only ever by Stede, especially not by Izzy, and he doesn't expect help. Either his plan works or everyone's gonna die, no way out, no attempts to avert disaster as it's happening. His life changes when he meets history's most feared and revered pirate, Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). If you rewatch, every time one of Ed's plans fails, he completely shuts down and turns directly into catastrophizing. Our Flag Means Death loosely follows the tale of Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) - an aristocrat who abandons his life of privilege to become a pirate. ![]()
